What to expect
An order from the physician will be needed. If this is difficult for the client to obtain, Laura can fax an order request to the physician.
- Laura will go to the client’s home if they live within a 50-mile radius of Zionsville. Further destinations will be considered on a case by case basis.
- The total evaluation takes approximately 3 to 4 hours and consists of a comprehensive, pre-driving evaluation followed by an on-road evaluation (if the pre-driving scores permit).
Pre-driving evaluation (2 hours) — Screens for deficits in vision, cognition, physical ability, behavior, judgment, attention, perception and reaction time.
On-road evaluation (1 hour) — This evaluation will be performed in a dual-equipped evaluation vehicle. The client is given sufficient time to acclimate to the vehicle’s controls and will then be advanced from their neighborhood to areas of more moderate traffic. If the client is an interstate or highway driver, the evaluation will include these roadways.
At the conclusion of the drive, Laura will sit down with the client and their family and/or friends (if the client chooses to include them) to discuss the results. A complete typewritten evaluation will follow.
Note: At this time, Medicare and many secondary payers do not consider driving to be “medically necessary” and will not pay for this service.
